Creating a Revolution in Management Education
Since its founding only thirty years ago, the mission of the Yale School of Management has been constant: to educate leaders for business and society. Today, Yale SOM is taking the lead in creating a new model of management education that responds to the dual demands of mission and contemporary management practice.
Our approach is premised on the model of a manager whose values and aspirations guide and influence the identification of those problems that are worth addressing, a manager who frames those problems in a way that is organizationally tractable, and then leads across the boundaries of function, geography, and organization to address them. This model has required a complete reconsideration of the MBA curriculum, and has resulted in breaking down the disciplinary silos that get in the way of understanding today’s most significant leadership and management challenges and their replacement with a series of innovative, multidisciplinary courses.
Our goals are ambitious. We must build a new campus to accommodate the teaching demands of our new curriculum and our growing community. We must create new faculty positions and compete for top students with increased scholarships. And we must continue to support the work of our distinguished academic centers, which—like our curriculum—cut across disciplinary silos and provide crucial links between the worlds of academia, public policy, and professional practice.
In realizing these goals, we fulfill our mission; we establish SOM as a true innovator and leader in management education; and we raise the standards of management as a profession. And with your assistance, we can achieve our goals. Please join Yale SOM in creating a revolution in management education.
