The Yale Cancer Hospital

The proposed Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven

Yale Cancer Center is one of the elite centers in the nation designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute, and the only such center in Connecticut and Southern New England. Yale Cancer Center physicians and scientists are advancing the field of cancer care through the development of new approaches for detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. This is being accomplished through the translation of scientific advances into valuable new therapies and methods for the early detection, treatment and prevention of direct benefit to patients in our care and for others across the country and around the world.

Yale Cancer Center’s success and continued progress depends upon the creation of the new Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, a $460 million project, $100 million of which must be secured through philanthropy. The senior leadership at Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital are united in realizing this goal with the full support and commitment of each organization’s volunteer leadership group, administration and fundraising office. Construction is underway.

Accelerating Science

Building on a 30-year legacy of achievement, the Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will be the nation's leading center for discovering new drugs and new therapies. Here, all cancer patients will gain access to the latest cancer drugs available, and many patients with certain types of cancers will be able to participate in exclusive clinical trials and Phase One scientific investigations originating in Yale Cancer Center laboratories. As a result, the Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will serve more patients and enable oncology faculty to enroll more patients on trials
— particularly studies based on Yale science — all while serving as one of the elite academic medical science centers in the world focused on redefining how cancer care is provided throughout the country. It will also help attract the world’s leading oncologists, cancer specialists, and clinical and basic research scientists to join the Yale Cancer Center team.

Premier Clinical Care

Cancer care is multidisciplinary, involving important input from several specialties. The hundreds of physicians, nurses, clinical researchers and laboratory technicians involved in cancer treatment at Yale are currently spread out over eight different locations across the medical campus.

This new state-of-the-art, 14-story facility will unite all of Yale Cancer Center clinical programs under one roof and will be the destination for patients with the most complicated and lethal cancers. It will also be the first cancer hospital in New England to house both inpatient (112-beds) and outpatient treatment facilities in one building, integrating a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment options with a strong focus on patient- and family-centered care.

When it opens its door in January 2010, the Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will house 11 interdisciplinary cancer disease teams focusing on breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, head and neck, leukemia and lymphoma, lung, melanoma, neuro-oncology, pediatric, and sarcoma. These physician teams will include oncologists, surgeons, radiotherapists, pathologists, and other specialists who will see patients in the same or adjacent clinics maximizing a comprehensive team approach to care. The hospital will also feature:

• Four inpatient care units dedicated to medical, surgical and gynecologic oncology
• Ambulatory specialty chemotherapy and apheresis centers
• Radiotherapy and Diagnostic Imaging centers
• Operating rooms
• An endoscopy-bronchoscopy suite
• Molecular, Diagnostic, Laboratory Medicine and Phlebotomy facilities
• Outpatient oncology clinics.

Patients and their families will also benefit from specialized resources, including a multifaceted and interactive information center and a boutique designed to cater to the needs of those in treatment. Recognizing the unique challenges for women and children with cancer, the new hospital will house a dedicated Women’s Cancer Center, including the Yale-New Haven Breast Center and the Gynecologic Oncology Center as well as a unit dedicated to pediatric care.

The facility will also feature a rooftop-healing garden adjacent to the 7th floor clinic spaces, a patient resource center and comfortable patient amenities to complement the latest treatment modalities and new technologies. With an eye toward tomorrow, shell space has also been reserved to meet anticipated demands for future expansion.

The Future

To address the short-term needs of growing patient volume, Yale Cancer Center will be renovating a 20,000 square foot off-site satellite facility to accommodate Medical Oncology’s expanding solid tumor service. This facility, located within a 5-minute drive of Yale Cancer Center, will house an infusion/chemotherapy suite, dedicated space for the clinical investigations program as well as a patient resource center and survivorship clinic. Projected occupancy for this satellite space is January 2007.

The Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven will be a world-class cancer hospital right in Connecticut. It will build on the rich scientific tradition of Yale Cancer Center and will enhance an exceptionally successful program that is bringing laboratory discoveries quickly and efficiently to advance clinical patient care. The cancer hospital is building hope for the patients of tomorrow and for the search to find the cure.
