Adrian Ryan ’09 at Branford College
Student Profile: Adrian Ryan BR ’09
Adrian Ryan ’09, of Branford College, came to Yale University from far away Homer, Alaska. A small community with rolling hills, abundant wildlife, and a population of only 4,000, Homer is a complete contrast to New Haven. But despite the aesthetic differences, Adrian quickly felt at home as a member of the Yale community.
With support from financial aid, Adrian is now beginning his third year of undergraduate study. When he’s not busy juggling torches and clubs—Adrian is president of the Yale Anti-Gravity Society—he can be found studying for his degree in computer science. Below, Adrian provides insight into his Yale experience thus far:
I chose to attend Yale because:
I always pictured myself at a small liberal arts college. But when it came time to make a decision about where to go, it became clear that Yale had the best combination of location, reputation, and student body. I was thrilled to discover that Yale succeeds in offering its students a small college experience with all the benefits of a large university.
The professor who’s taught me the most:
Professor of Computer Science, Dana Angluin. She taught the intro class for the computer science major during my freshman year. The range of topics covered in the course showed me what computer science really is. It was the course that inspired me to be a computer science major.
My best class this semester:
Introduction to Systems Programming and Computer Organization (CS323). Everyone says that it is the hardest class in computer science. It is. But that’s what makes it so rewarding.
The greatest book I read at Yale:
I am currently reading David Chalmer's On Consciousness. It wasn't assigned for a class, but one of my professors recommended it.
My favorite place to study:
Usually in my room, but sometimes I'll go to the Branford library. It is a nice quiet space and much more conducive to writing for long periods of time.
My plans for study or work abroad:
I've already spent a semester abroad in Paris, France. It was one of the loveliest times I have ever had, and I wouldn't have been able to do it if Yale did not offer generous aid. My hope is to be able to go back this summer and get an internship or a job in computing.
My preferred extracurricular activity:
I juggle. I am the President of the Yale Anti-Gravity Society, and together we practice and learn new tricks from each other. As a group, we do some community service, like teaching kids and performing in hospitals and nursing homes. We also perform at a variety of venues around campus. It’s great fun.
After graduation, I plan to:
I'll probably try to find a job for the first few years after graduation, have a “real life,” and save some money for school again. I'd love to live abroad during this time. As a young person with few ties, it will be the best chance I have to travel and live in a different country.
Something I learned at Yale that I will always remember:
Getting work done on time is all about time management.
